Local Philanthropies & Community Service
|

Part of being a Phi Tau means giving back to your campus and community. That is why the
Delta Tau Chapter of Phi Kappa Tau participates in community service and philanthropic events
throughout every school year. In fact, it is part of our National Fraternity's Creed, "to discharge
the obligation to others which arises from the fact that (we are) fraternity men."

Phi Tau's from Cal Poly Pomona work the Starting Line of the annual L.A. Marathon.
Standing before a sea of over 20,000 runners is quite a rush.

Our Chapter supports many local causes by donating time, money, and other goods to various
organizations in the Greater Los Angeles area. From simple things such as donating clothes, money,
and toys, to larger projects like working at the Starting Line at the annual City of Los Angeles
Marathon
(website),
we are always eager to help those in need.
We frequently assist the Cal Poly community by volunteering to set-up for and assist during
campus Career Days and other similar events hosted by the Cal Poly Career Center
(website).

|
The Chapter also has a strong working relationship with Project SISTER
(website),
a local organization dedicated to reducing the trauma and incidence of sexual assault in local
communities by helping survivors return to healthy, productive lives and educating those
communities on the nature and causes of sexual violence.
We also host an annual volleyball tournament, the Red & Gold Classic
(info),
in which sororities compete and procedes benefit The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp,
the Official Philanthropy of the Phi Kappa Tau National Fraternity.
We truly believe in lending talents and energy in helping great causes to be successful, and our
actions definitely speak louder than our words.

Phi Kappa Tau's National Philanthropy: The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp
|
|
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp
(website)
is the Official Philanthropy of the Phi Kappa Tau National Fraternity.
Each year, brothers from across the country donate both their time and money to the camps.
The Camp originated in Connecticut in 1988 and was founded by our National Fraternity's most
famous alumnus, Paul Newman. It has since grown to support other similar camps across the nation.
With the The Painted Turtle Camp
(website)
now open in Southern California soon, our Chapter has gotten more
involved in this philanthropy than ever. Our fundraising efforts for this great cause have increased
annually, promarily as a result of our annual Red & Gold Classic Volleyball Tournament,
(info)
which benefits the Painted Turtle Camp specifically. Plus, brothers donate their time over the
summer to volunteer at the camp.
The following are excerpts from Hole in the Wall Gang Camp literature:

Camp Mission
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp, founded by Paul Newman in 1988, is a nonprofit residential summer camp,
an ingeniously designed and dazzlingly equipped Wild West hideout in northeastern Connecticut,
where children with cancer or other serious blood diseases do not have to sit on the sidelines.
Over 1,000 children from 7 to 15 years old come each year, free of charge, from across the United
States and abroad.
Year-Round Programs
The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp provides year-round activities for campers and other seriously ill
children and their siblings at Camp and in their own communities. Camp sponsored programs provide
health care professionals and social workers with support and training. Retreats are organized for
the children's parents at resorts around the country offering respite, counseling, mutual support and
positive activities, free of charge. Over 3,500 family members take part in the fall to spring programs.
Support of Other Camps
The Hole in the Wall Gang Fund has helped to found other camps with missions like The Hole in the
Gang Camp by providing medical, programmatic, architectural, accounting, and fundraising advice and
financial support. These camps include The Barretstown Gang Camp (Ireland), The Boggy Creek Gang Camp
(Florida), The Double "H"--Hole In The Woods Ranch (New York State), L'Envol (France), The Painted
Turtle Camp (California), The Victory Junction Gang Camp (North Carolina) and The Jordan River
Village (Israel).
Summer Camp Program
In each of the nine camp sessions, between early morning polar bear swims and evening campfires,
approximately 120 children become naturalists and fishermen, athletes and actors, equestrians
and hot air balloonists, potters and painters, poets and photographers, swimmers and singers,
fly tiers and fly fishermen, outdoor campers and canoe paddlers, clowns and musicians, woodworkers
and kite flyers. At stage night, awards night, carnival day, the camp dance, and through "cabin chats,"
and camp songs and celebrations at every meal, campers inspire each other.

Here, the campers give encouragement and understanding and laughter and comfort to each other.
To counselors, to the medical staff and to the volunteers, they give the spirited example of their courage.
Under the guidance of five nurses, two doctors, 30 counselors, 30 program directors, and another
two dozen staff members, campers experience more than a joyous holiday. Camp is a critical experience
in their lives. The Camp operates on the belief that every camper is going to be an adult and needs
a good childhood to become one.
