About Recruitment at Cal Poly
|
|
FORMAL RUSH
Cal Poly's Interfraternity Council (IFC) holds its semi-annual Formal Rush periods during the first full week of the Fall and
Spring Quarters. All of the fraternities will have informational booths set up and will be hosting events during those evenings.
Fraternities also sometimes conduct "informal" rush periods. These special recruitment events vary in the time that
|
they are held
and in the length of the Recruitment period overall. When a Rush period is going on, you are encouraged to visit
as many of these tables and events as you can and find out which group is your best match. It is also important for you
to be yourself, in order to determine which group of men you best identify with.
WHAT IS RUSH?
Rush is a generally a week-long event starting on Monday and ending on Tuesday of the following week with "Bid Day".
Rush is a time for you to experience a taste of fraternity life and find a group of men with whom you can become friends.
It can be a real experience for everyone involved, and for you, the "rushee." Rush is not a "coolness" or popularity contest.
It is a chance for you to become part of a society that promotes academics, community service, and brotherhood.
Most everyone who rushes will find a group of men that best represents their ideals and personalities.
RUSH EVENTS
The first event during both the Fall and Spring Formal Rush periods is the Interfraternity Council Information Night.
This is where you will learn about the week ahead and the rushing process in general. This is a great opportunity for you to
learn more about how being in a fraternity, especially at Cal Poly, is beneficial. Every fraternity participating in Formal
Rush will hold events throughout the week. As a rushee, you must consider all 8 fraternities and decide which events you would
like to attend that each night that you are able to. During the day, each participating fraternity will have an information booth
located somewhere on campus so that you can meet the gentlemen before deciding to

attend their event. Try to participate in as many events as possible and get to know the men on a one-to-one basis.
Be sure to score some free food and quality entertainment in the process!
INVITE DINNERS
Towards the end of most Rush periods, most fraternities hold an invite-only dinner. If you were not invited to a dinner,
that does not always mean that you are not wanted by the fraternity, and it may not be too late to get a "bid" from that
fraternity; but it is likely that they felt that you were not the right fit for thier Chapter. Unless otherwise stated,
invite dinners are usually a formal event (i.e., shirt and tie - maybe a jacket).
GETTING A BID
A bid is a formal invitation to join a fraternity. During a Formal Rush period, Bid Day is the Tuesday following rush week.
During University Hour (from 12 noon to 1:00 pm) on this day, you are invited to the Greek Affairs Office in the Stables across
from the University Union. Specific instructions will be explained by the individual Chapters. There, a "bid" may or
may not await you from a fraternity. More than one fraternity may extend you a bid. In that case, you must decide which
one to pick up, which indicates which fraternity you would like to pledge. If you cannot make it to Bid Day, but still wish
to join a fraternity, you should contact that fraternity's Recruitment Chairman directly.
BLACK-OUT DAY
During formal recruitment periods, it is likely that a "Black-Out Day" will be enforced. A Black-Out Day is a day in
which no Fraternity member may contact or associate with any Rushee. This is to allow the Rushee a chance to decide on his
own which Fraternity he would like to join, without being coerced by any one Fraternity. This day is generally the Monday
before the day that bids are handed out.

Benefits of Fraternity Membership
|
|
LIFELONG FRIENDS
Joining a fraternity is your opportunity to become friends with men who share your interests, your values, and your future
aspirations. The men you meet will be men of character, loyalty, and integrity. Lasting friendships are formed over time
through common activities, living in the house together, and shared leadership experiences. Brothers come from all walks
of life and from all parts of the world.
ACADEMIC SUPPORT & EXCELLENCE
Doing well in your classes is priority one for members of fraternities. When you join a fraternity, your brothers become
tutors and study partners. Most fraternities also offer scholarship/financial incentives for achieving high marks.
Academic excellence is an expectation of a good brother. The diversity of collegiate majors within a fraternity assures
that you can find assistance when you need it.
LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Leadership opportunities exist throughout your fraternal experience on a local and national level. Each brother has a chance
to contribute to the success of his fraternity and Greek community by assuming leadership positions and coordinating major events.
Joining a fraternity helps you develop a skill set to deal with important issues that are easily transferred to a work setting
when you graduate. In addition, you can attend nationally recognized leadership programs to develop your skills as well.
SOCIAL & SPORTS ACTIVITIES
Sitting alone in your room doesn't lead to many lasting memories of college. There are a variety of social activities that
fraternity men become involved in. Intramural sports are an integral part of the fraternity experience. Whatever your skill,
whatever your interest, there is a team for you to participate on. Like being around a lot of people? There are social
activities for you. Prefer to interact in smaller groups? Many activities are geared toward you as well. It is through
these activities that you really get connected to your fraternity, the Greek community, and the campus. Don't make the
assumption that social means alcohol. Social should be defined as interacting with a variety of people in unique settings.
NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES
No where else on campus can you find a professional network of alumni than through a fraternity's alumni group. You're not
only connected with alumni from your campus, but from the entire fraternity. There are over five million fraternity alumni
world-wide. This network is helpful in securing internships, summer work, and professional careers.
WELL-ROUNDED, FULFILLING COLLEGE EXPERIENCE
Fraternities complement to your academic activities. Fraternities provide terrific practical experience. As a fraternity leader,
you often have the chance to practice what you're learning in your courses. Memories of your time in college will be filled
with all the activities and fun you experienced outside the classroom. Join a fraternity to get a complete education.
DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI
These fraternity men have reached the pinnacle of success in their chosen careers. Don't forget about the countless men,
who although not famous, who are part of a fraternity that make a difference in the lives of others. Joining a fraternity was
the start of something big for these men! What about for you?
